Decision (maintainer, 2026-09-30). Data services are first-class appliances: PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch (to decide). Embedded in a simple installation, discovered on the mesh in an advanced one. A search index is derived data, rebuilt on join, never file-replicated.

Handbook: docs/decisions/0033-data-services-are-first-class.md (handbook#26)

Amends: 0013 (standard set extended with a search engine; phase 1 becomes the advanced default), 0010 (these are its components; packaging in 0036).

Review notes

  • Elasticsearch vs OpenSearch is open (roadmap). Neither is in Debian 13 main; either needs a Keel package, and the licences belong in the comparison.

First tasks

  • MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Redis standalone and paired (roadmap Phase 2).
  • Short comparison note: Elasticsearch vs OpenSearch.
